top RESEARCH INTERESTS

My work in the  Environmental Microbial Genomics Group first started by focusing on Arctic microbiology, particularly the biogeographical characteristics of microbial communities in Arctic snow. I am interested in understanding how microorganisms adapt to the  cryosphere environments, and how those communities react to climate change.

My PhD work concerns the early evolution of life. One of the major hypotheses about the first forms of life is that they involved living entities with an RNA-encoded genome (RNA world), while all modern cellular lifeforms contain DNA-encoded genomes (DNA world). If life indeed started in an RNA world, there must have been a major transition stage that led to the DNA world we live in now. RNA-dependent DNA polymerases, comparable to modern retroviral retrotranscriptases would have been crucial for this transition. I am exploring the diversity of modern RNA-dependent DNA polymerases in order to trace their role in the evolution of early life.
