top RESEARCH INTERESTS

Currently, my research interests are focussed on the adaption of Arctic microbial communities facing climate change with a specific emphasis on plasmid-mediated trait acquisition. Sequencing technologies have revolutionised the field of microbial ecology and we are on the cusp of a similar breakthrough in plasmid ecology. Therefore, my project aims to better characterise the ‘plasmidome’ of Arctic communities through plasmid community isolation followed by metagenomic sequencing. The outcome will be an unprecedented view of plasmid encoded traits in polar communities, many of which are expected to be novel. This will lead to a better understanding of microbial community adaption in the Arctic and an indication of the involvement of plasmids in important ecosystem functioning.
